The stainless steel Hitachi trains entered service on the Melbourne suburban network in 1972.
They were built by Martin & King with electrical equipment from Hitachi of Japan.
237 ‘M’ motor cars were built as well as 62 ‘D’ driving trailers and 50 ‘T’ trailer cars. Additionally 100 ‘D’ driving trailers were ordered but only approximately 62 were built.
They originally ran in unpainted stainless steel and later received a green and yellow strip with the introduction of the Metropolitan Transit Authority in 1983.
